Did you set a New Year’s resolution?
I was surprised to learn something recently.
Most New Year’s resolutions fail.
Around 80% get abandoned by February.
Wishing isn’t goal setting.
Get your goals down in writing.
Preferably no more than 3 goals.
1 – 2 is best.
So that’s what we did…
The first day back after the holidays, we organised a team goal-setting meeting.
We got caffeinated.
We staggered into the board room.
We put dogs on our laps.
We unsheathed our mighty pens.
We flicked through a specially prepared 8-page worksheet…
Or maybe “Funsheet”?
No, okay. Worksheet.
And we spent 15 minutes thinking about our individual goals.
Then, if our brains were kind to us, we each wrote down 2 goals.
1 personal goal.
1 professional goal.
As a general guide, we followed the SMART formula.
S – Specific – what, specially, do you want to achieve?
M – Measurable – how will you measure success?
A – Achievable – given your resources, is it realistic/achievable?
R – Relevant – why is this goal important to you?
T – Time-bound – when will you achieve it by?
For inspiration, these are some simplified examples from our team:
- Meditate at least 3 days a week for 30 minutes
- No drinking alcohol for at least 1 month
- Read every day for 1 hour
- Finish drafting the marketing course in 1 month
- Start the day by sitting in the sun for 30 minutes before looking at any technology
- Save up money to travel around Europe
- Use a standing desk at work
- Get 8 hours sleep each night
- Create a regular journaling habit
- Learn to play tennis
For myself, my goals are to run every day and hire more people.
And to stay away from chocolate and lollies for the year…
But that may not be realistic.
My staff think I’ll cave in less than 1 month.
My wife gave me 4 days.
I’ve got the 8-page “SMART Goals Worksheet” handy if you want it.
And if you want to talk specific marketing goals for 2023, that’s what we’re here for.
Here’s to a great year of goal crushing!
